Ag commissioner hopeful to speak

Athens-Clarke Commission

Story updated at 1:08 AM on Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Gary Black, the Republican nominee for state agriculture commissioner, will be the guest speaker today at a meeting of the University of Georgia College Republicans.

Black, a UGA graduate who lives in Commerce, will speak at 7 p.m. in Room 248 of the Student Learning Center. Black defeated Athens resident Brian Kemp in the Aug. 8 runoff and will face Democratic incumbent Tommy Irvin in November. The event is free and is open to the public.

State Sen. Brian Kemp, R-Athens, has endorsed Gary Black, who defeated him in the Republican primary, for Georgia agriculture commissioner.

"I ran for this office because I think it is time for a change and time for new leadership," Kemp said. "Gary Black can provide the change and leadership that this office is in desperate need of and that is why I am proud to support him."
